The Khumbu region of Nepal is sometimes called the ‘top of the world’, topped by the black summit of Mount Everest, the world’s highest mountain. It is home to the Sherpa people, who are known for their hospitality as well as their mountaineering skills. Sherpas practise the Tibetan Buddhist faith and have lived in the high valleys of Nepal for at least three centuries. The region is now controlled by the Sagamartha National Park.
It is an area of great natural beauty – home to Himalayan Thar, musk deer and Nepal’s national bird, the brightly coloured Danphe pheasant. The Khumbu region is also famous for its magnificent mountains and stunning scenery. The views of the 8000m Mount Everest, Lhotse and Cho Oyu, as well as the smaller peaks of Nuptse, Thamserku, Kangtega and Kwangde are some of the best in Nepal. Some say the most impressive of all is the beautiful Mount Ama Dablam.
The trek takes us along the route of Edmund Hillary and Tensing Norgay Sherpa and the 1953 British Expedition to the very foot of Mount Everest. From Kala Pattar, we can get close up views of the highest place on the planet. The trip is well-planned to ensure correct acclimatisation and includes time in the Chhukhung valley, a high altitude world of massive glaciers and snowy peaks.
Trek description: This trek is graded C : a demanding trek, with walking days of between 3 to 6 hours, when there is time to explore the locale or trek a little higher and return, to some longer walking days of 6 hours or more. This trek is suitable for fit and experienced hill-walkers with the stamina for 16 days on the trail in remote high altitude terrain. The ascent of Kalar Pattar is a straightforward walk on a good trail. It is important to remember that most of the trek is above 3000m, therefore, short days walks and small ascents are essential for proper and safe acclimatisation. Trails are mostly well maintained, sandy or rocky paths and steep steps, which lead through a variety of beautiful and breathtaking landscapes, including pine and rhododendron forests, as well as glacial moraine. The trek should also appeal to those with an interest in Buddhism and the culture of these high-altitude people, the Sherpas.
Maximum altitude: Kala Pattar 5545m (sleeping at Gorakshep 5150m).
Best season: October – early December and late March – May
Summer Trek: Sure, you can trek during the summer months, but be prepared for rain. It is monsoon season in Nepal. You will enjoy the solitude of a much less crowded trekking route, and see the splendor of flowers, plants and wildlife. It will not be as cold at the lodges as during the high season, but still, you’ll need a warm jacket.
