The Khumbu region of Nepal is sometimes called the ‘top of the world’, topped by the summit of Mount Everest, the world’s highest mountain. It is home to the Sherpa people, who are known for their hospitality as well as their mountaineering skills. Sherpas practise the Tibetan Buddhist faith and have lived in the high valleys of Nepal for at least three centuries. The region is now controlled by the Sagamartha National Park.
It is an area of great natural beauty – home to Himalayan Thar, musk deer and Nepal’s national bird, the brightly coloured Danphe pheasant. The Khumbu region is also famous for its magnificent mountains and stunning scenery. The views of the 8000m Mount Everest, Lhotse and Cho Oyu, as well as the smaller peaks of Nuptse, Thamserku, Kangtega and Kwangde are some of the best in Nepal. Some say the most impressive of all is the beautiful Mount Ama Dablam.
The trek takes us along the route of Edmund Hillary and Tensing Norgay Sherpa and the 1953 British Expedition to the very foot of Mount Everest. From Kala Pattar, we can get close up views of the highest place on the planet. The trip is well-planned to ensure correct acclimatisation and includes time in the Chhukhung valley, a high altitude world of massive glaciers and snowy peaks.
