How to Choose A Kayaking School in Nepal
This week I am writing about kayaking courses in Nepal, because we have been busy with our Kayak Bootcamp here at Hardcore Nepal. August is not usually the best time for learning kayaking on the river, because the water is high, but here a some options for all levels of beginners for any time of year.
Hardcore Nepal has a three day Kayak Bootcamp that takes place on the Trisuli River, but it’s not the right class for everyone. Some people learn better at a slower pace and may do better starting their class in a lake rather than the slower whitewater eddies where we choose to teach. So, first, choose which type of learner you are, then pick your kayaking school.
Extreme Adventurer – I Can Learn to Kayak Yesterday
Right! If you have the kick-ass-balls-to-the wall attitude that we require for most Hardcore Nepal adventures, then our 3 day Kayak Bootcamp is right for you. It’s basically a learn to roll quickly, hit the water and have some fun type of training. We teach you balance, safety and basic paddling techniques to get you comfortable. We start with becoming familiar and comfortable with your kayak on day one, and we do a little river paddling. That afternoon we practice the Eskimo Roll, if you can hit it, your ready for some bigger rapids. The next two days, we build up your confidence by helping you face the challenge of some class III rapids on the Trisuli River. If that works out, and you are ready to paddle with us, then just add on some more days. Or head out to another river.
Stoked but Not Sure How I’ll Do Once I Hit Whitewater
If this is you, you MAY be ready for Kayak Bootcamp, but maybe not. If you want to play it a bit safer, go for one of the 4 Day Kayak Clinics offered by one of the many outfitters in Thamel or Pokhara Lakeside. These kayak clinics go at a bit of a slower pace, and have less of a drill sergeant feel to them. The goal is the same though, and hopefully you will be able to paddle on your own by day 3 or 4. That depends on you. The 4 day clinics are usually on the Trisuli or Seti Rivers, and offer beach camping each night.
I Can Learn to Kayak with a Bit of Patience and Loving Kindness – Ommmm
OK, if this is you… we love you, but Kayak Bootcamp with Hardcore Nepal is not for you! However, there are some good options. I suggest you start in Pokhara, and connect with one of the kayaking schools there that begin their kayaking lessons on the Phewa Tal (one of Nepal’s most beautiful lakes). This is easy paddling and learning on completely flat water. Your kayaking instructor will keep bringing you to the lake for as long as you need, but again, the goal is to get you out onto some whitewater in Nepal! These classes can be extended beyond the normal 4 days if needed.
Kayak Clinics usually cost around $200 – $250 for 4 days. Kayak Bootcamp with Hardcore Nepal is $180.
